
A Pennsylvania mom faces criminal charges for taking her son's thirteen-year-old girlfriend out of state for an abortion. Rosa Marie
Hartford helped a high-school freshman avoid the state's law that requires parental consent for abortion by driving her to a New York clinic. The girl's parents did not know she was pregnant.
The Pennsylvania D.A. says Hartford had no right to subject the girl to what he characterized as a hazardous procedure and is prosecuting her for interfering with the custody of a child.
Meanwhile, civil libertarians say she was only helping the child to exercise her consitutional rights.
Hartford's stepson, Michael Kilmer, 19, who impregnated the girl, has pleaded guilty to two counts of statutory rape.
